happy with Windows 7 -- see what the world is up 2 !!

Next Gen Operating Systems

Greetings...!!

So, everybody has checked Windows 7 ?? Maximum of you might have loved it. Others may have mixed feelings (as they might not have managed retail copy !!). But we will not disscuss it as it's time for our new topic i.e.

G-Speak

What is it ? Basically it is an Operating System, but much more than that. Let's start with its history.Have you watched Steven Spielberg's science fiction - Minority Report ?? If no, go for trailers available online (trailer). Basically it depicts a fully gestural system which takes gestures as input and provides output on nearby surfaces being used as screen. The scientific adviser of the movie formed a team and started working to bring life to system, and he succeeded it in early 2009.
Now what this system actually is and how does it works, I will try to explain that.
G-Speak is a Spacial Operating Environment (SOE).
The SOE's combination of gestural i/o, recombinant networking, and real-world pixels brings the first major step in computer interface.

The g-speak platform is a complete application development and execution environment that redresses the dire constriction of human intent imposed by traditional GUIs. Its idiom of spatial immediacy and information responsive to real-world geometry enables a necessary new kind of work: data-intensive, embodied, real-time, predicated on universal human expertise.

See the video to get over view of the system.

The next thing is that how the stuff works in this OS. When we say that G-Speak provides us a gestural environment, then there should be some device that captures our gestures and feed them into the system. The developers came up with the concept of LightBulb. The LightBulb or the I/O Bulb looks out at the world, and so any computation that uses an I/O Bulb has a way to figure out what's going on out there. Then it can paint a piece of the world with information, in response to what's going on. An I/O Bulb grips the real world on both sides, info coming and going.
To respond to different motions captured by the LightBulb, the projector was used. The user can actually use any surface as screen and see the outcome of his/her actions.

One important aspect of the project is the software that can synchronize the working of whole system and as well as manage the resources added to it. The most important part to be played by the software is to understand what the user is intending to do. The software is designed to understand the gestures of the user. Watch the video what actually understanding of gestures can do when the user plays with pics -- watch it here (I will embed video here soon).

Lets see that what other features are available in G-Speak:

Multiple Users Can work simultaneously

Uses only gestures to identify input

Can interconnect multiple screens at a single time etc.

We all have seen Pranav Mistry's Sixth Sense apparatus where he gestures in front of a camera and software performs the required action after reading the type of gesture sensed by the camera. It is worthy to mention that G-Speak was introduced before the Sixth Sense !!! Here, being much more advance technique, they have tried to capture the movement from every angle for a much more precise action. The above two images encircle the LightBulbs.

There are several aspects that needs to be covered regarding the technology. I will try to cover them in next posts and that too, soon...!!!! I am going to modify the blog to accommodate a column about
Google Go.

Till then its goodbye from me and please try to post your comments, queries and suggestions.
